Safety and Safe Haven

Danger to the Station from fire, a meteoroid impact penetrating the hull of a module, ionized radiation from an unpredictably large solar flare, or crew illness all have to be considered when designing systems and procedures that minimize these hazards. Since most critical functions of the Station and its crew are monitored by the Mission Control Center through communications and telemetry, the recognition of a problem would be swift. In life-threatening situations, the safe haven concept would be used to afford the greatest protection to the crew. In defining the safe haven concept, it is understood that this is a capability and not necessarily a specific module or place. Safe haven design criteria provides for multiple exits from modules, and a store of supplies that will allow the crew to retreat to a portion of the Station which affords the greatest protection.
